Therefore repent and be converted, that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,  and that He may send the One who previously was preached to you, Jesus Christ, whom the heavens must receive until the time of restoring what God spoke through all His holy prophets since the world began.

Acts 3:19-21

Times of Refreshing

You hear a lot of talk nowadays about self care. It’s about how we all need to take better care of ourselves, especially if we are in helping careers. But even those who are not need time away to decompress. We all just need some times of refreshing.

And there are a lot of things out there that we can do to refresh and renew and re-energize our minds and hearts. Some folks exercise. Others read. Friends of mine love walking on the beach and other friends love hiking in the mountains. Time spent with family and friends can restore our souls. Unplugging from the world, whether it’s from social media, the news, or the constant notifications of our phones is hard to do…but can be oh, so refreshing!

The Refreshing Presence of the Lord

While all of those things are fine and certainly helpful, there is nothing more refreshing than the presence of the Lord. Jesus often invited his disciples to come away with him for rest. Many times David writes in the Psalms of hiding away in God. It is during those times that the soul and heart and mind can be fully restored. When God speaks to our hearts, all the other stuff seems to melt away.

This refreshment doesn’t have to mean some days or weeks away from our responsibilities, although that’s not a bad idea! 🙂 But maybe it’s simply honoring a Sabbath day each week. Perhaps there are a few moments in each day where we turn our minds off and our hearts to Him. However it comes about for you, enjoy it…savor every moment…so that the times of refreshing are real and meaningful.

I think I may be due for a little refreshing simply from Him!
