This week we are lighting the third candle of Advent and considering the joy that awaits us in the arrival of Jesus. As a reminder, I’m using Unwrapping the Names of Jesus by Asheritah Ciuciu as my Advent devotional this season.

A Cause for Great Joy

The birth of a baby is always a joyous occasion. New life. Sweet fingers and toes. Lots of promise for what the future will hold. I can’t imagine that it was any less for Mary and Joseph when Jesus was born.

Luke records Jesus’ birth announcements from the angels,

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. Luke 2:10-11

This was good news that was a cause for great joy. The Savior was born. I can’t imagine any better news than that.

For All the People

But do you notice what the angel said? Jesus’ birth is a cause of great joy for all the people. This was an act of God for everyone who would believe, shepherds and kings alike. It wasn’t just for the privileged few. Nor was it for those who were poor and had nothing else to look forward to. It was for all.

The testimony is that part of the joy of Jesus’ arrival is that He erased all the lines between people. He came for all of us. He came to save all of us.

Joy to the World

Indeed that night was full of joy to the world. And it was a joy that reached from that night long ago all the way down to us. I can’t imagine anything more joyful than that.

But I also know that I haven’t focused on that joy like I should. It’s easy to get caught up in day-to-day living, not to mention all the hustle and bustle of this time of the year. So what a blessing it is to celebrate Advent…to stop for a moment each day and consider the coming of our Lord and Savior.

We sang Chris Tomlin’s version of Joy to the World at church on Sunday. And I just love this verse:

Joy, unspeakable joy
An overflowing well
No tongue can tell
Joy, unspeakable joy
Rises in my soul, never let’s me go

Joy to the world. Unspeakable joy. A joy so amazing that only angels could announce it. May it never let any of us go.
