There was a lot of lottery fever going around a few weeks ago. Every day the news reported on how high the prize had gotten. Social media was filled with pictures of tickets. And people talked about what they would do if they won.
I’ve often wondered what I would do if I won the lottery. Of course, you have to play to win, which I don’t. But it’s still an interesting thought to have. What would you do if you have all the money you could imagine?
Lots of folks say they’d quit the jobs, or buy a house, or pay off their debt. The last one being a good idea anytime you come into some extra money! I’ve often imagined what I would do in that situation. I’d certainly help my children and make some plans for my grandchildren’s future. My debt is small but I’d pay it off anyway. I’d give some away too. It’d be a great opportunity to help out some of my favorite causes. I’m not sure much else would change though, and here’s why…
The week before the big drawing, my pastor talked about the conversation he and his wife had about what they would do if they played the lottery and won. He said she was surprised to learn that he wouldn’t quit his job. His reasoning is that his job is a calling, and God hadn’t changed his calling. He also thought God wouldn’t change his calling just based on an influx of money.
It’s an interesting viewpoint and I had to ask myself, does my calling from God change just because my physical circumstances change?
The writer of Hebrews said,
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
Contentment has to be the key. Our contentment can’t be dependent upon our circumstances. It has to be dependent on God’s presence in our lives. Winning the lottery might make some of life
So would I quit my job if I won the lottery? I don’t think so. Unless, of course, God told me to. Better to rely on the presence of God and find contentment there.
Even if it is fun to think about what I’d do if I won!
