For this is what the high and exalted One says—
he who lives forever, whose name is holy:
‘I live in a high and holy place,
but also with the one who is contrite and lowly in spirit,
to revive the spirit of the lowly
and to revive the heart of the contrite.’

Isaiah 57:15

It had been a very long week. Two business trips. Two major events on two different campuses. A paper due at the end of the week. And every time I opened an email, answered the phone, or someone walked in my office, my to-do list got longer.

By the time Sunday morning rolled around, I just wanted to crawl back under the covers and not talk with anyone. Ever again.

But I got up (partly because I had to drive back up the mountain, if I’m being honest). Mostly though because I wanted to go to church. I wanted to be in the house of the Lord with His people, singing His praises, and reading His word.

As I walked up the sidewalk, the pastor met me with a hearty greeting. I wish I could say I felt even half as energized as he sounded. He graciously asked how I was doing and listened kindly as I described how drained I felt. And then he invited me in to worship, to sit in the presence of Father, and to be refreshed.

A high and holy revival

Which is exactly what happened. There is such a sweet spirit among God’s people that you can’t help but be refreshed in their presence. It’s a time to leave all of the other stuff at the door. I love sitting on the pew and feeling the palpable Presence. And I always walk out lighter than when I walked in.

The testimony is this: God has promised to revive the spirit of the lowly and the heart of the contrite. When we come to Him with all that is weighing us down, He will take a hold of it and help to carry it. He will lift our spirits and bring joy to our hearts.

It’s the kind of revival I need almost daily. And it’s the kind of revival I always find when I turn to the One who sits up high and holy.
