simple elegance

I’m all about loving some good worship. The bigger the better. I love the music. The lights. The singing. The slide show. The hands in the air. Love. It.

But sometimes a quieter, simpler take on worship is in order. And I love it too.

We came into church last Sunday morning to no power. The wind had howled all night long in what we are hoping was winter’s last hurrah. The power lines were no match for it though. We walked in and it was dark. Nothing, nada, zip anywhere in the entire building. Except in the sanctuary. Funnier than that though is that we had heat and lights, but nothing else electrical. No microphones or projectors. No instruments or amplifiers. Nothing, nada, zip.

So what do you do? You do it old school. Pull out two acoustic guitars and two people stand on the stage and sing simple hymns. The Old Rugged Cross. Victory in Jesus. I’ll Fly Away. The profound found in the simple.

And it made me wonder: do we make it too hard sometimes? Do we worry so much about the way it is done that we forget the why it is done?

The Simple Elegance of the Gospel

The Gospel message is so simple. God loved us. We were sinners. He sent Jesus to save us. Boom. Done.

Sometimes it is good to be reminded of that. On a Sunday with no power except His. Reminiscent of the simple elegance of His life. Unplugged from everything except the one true Source.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

What’s been one of your most meaningful worship experiences?

Thanks for creating community here with us! The Big Red Sofa Series is about the things I see in life that make me go hmmmm. What God teaches me in scripture. The ordinary things that God can use to drive home spiritual lessons. The questions I sometimes ask. The stories we can all share. So pull up a cushion and join me on the sofa. I’d love to hear from you!
