Welcome to the Big Red Sofa. Sit right down and let’s have a chat!
It’s been a rough couple of weeks. Things have come out of nowhere to blindside me and left me sputtering about what to do. And yes, I said things. As in more than one. Whew.
I’m wondering what you do when life just hits you upside the head and you don’t know where to turn next. Me? Well, I cried. And I didn’t sleep well. And I worried. And I talked to two trusted friends. And I spent some time in God’s word.
Care to guess which one of those gave me the most peace? No offense meant to the friends who so patiently listened, held me up, and wanted to do battle for me!
Yep, it was God’s word. And it was a great reminder to me that God’s word is indeed relevant to us today. So what I realized is that if I’m not spending time in God’s word, then I’m saying it isn’t relevant to me. And the last two weeks has proven to me that nothing could be further from the truth.
It’s made me look at the days I don’t spend enough (or any) time in God’s word. What? am I too busy? too tired? uninterested? afraid? And if I’m not in God’s word, then the next question is, who or what am I listening to? Because here’s the thing…
There’s power in the words of God.
There just is. Power to heal. Power to calm. Power to comfort. Power to grieve. Power to encourage. Power to empower. So we never have to be afraid of what we will find there.
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. I John 4:18
God’s perfect love casts our any fear I may have of what’s in His word. The Holy Spirit works through those words to call us into relationship with the Father…and with His words.
Here’s hoping your week is off to a great start…and that you started it off in God’s word. That’s my goal this week…to start every day off in God’s word. To let His love cast off fear. And to let His Spirit call me into those words.
Won’t you join me?
Thanks for creating community here with us! The Big Red Sofa Series is about the things I see in life that make me go hmmmm. What God teaches me in scripture. The ordinary things that God can use to drive home spiritual lessons. The questions I sometimes ask. The stories we can all share. So pull up a cushion and join me on the sofa. I’d love to hear from you!
