This post is publishing later than normal because the story is still being written. It’s the story of a work that God is doing. Four friends have taken time out of schedules and away from family to meet in the middle and get to know one another better and encourage each one’s individual pursuits.

The heat has been oppressive. The cabin is fine but wasn’t quite what we expected. The WiFi gave up the ghost on the very first night. But don’t ever tell four determined women that you can’t make something work! A cool coffee shop with some free WiFi and we were back in business.

Being with God’s people brings to mind many scriptures about what happens when believers are together…

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:23-25

For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them. Matthew 18:20

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. I Peter 2:9-10

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us… Hebrews 12:1

Maybe that’s what times like these are supposed to teach us. We show up and God does all the work. Regardless of the surroundings or the amenities. In spite of difficulties and concerns. He is faithful when we gather together. We can gather because we are all His people. We can be one another’s cloud of witnesses as we run the race marked out for each of us. Today I’m grateful that God can do a wonder in the eating and laughing, in the resting and sharing, in the authentic transparency shared by God’s people.

I’m also grateful for good friends…encouragement…a little air conditioning and some WiFi. And I’ll keep you posted on the rest of this story!

Thanks for creating community here with us! The Big Red Sofa Series is about the things I see in life that make me go hmmmm. What God teaches me in scripture. The ordinary things that God can use to drive home spiritual lessons. The questions I sometimes ask. The stories we can all share. So pull up a cushion and join me on the sofa. I’d love to hear from you!
